Three cheers for YouCan!

A YouCan grant has helped Pauline Bennett, aka ‘Jazzi P’, to bring cheerleading combined with dance to young people at a price they can afford. Coaching performance and competition teams for over 20 years from Wolverhampton to Barbados, Pauline is training youngsters aged between 11-18 years of age to perform at Wolverhampton’s annual City Show in West Park this July. She said: “My main aim is to bring dance to the community and, thanks to Youcan, I can provide a good quality service and keep the cost down to just £2.50 per person. The grant application was really, really easy and straightforward and I used it to help with the public liability insurance and to rent the space I need. “I like to bring different experiences to youngsters and dance builds their self esteem and social network. I’m delighted to say there is now a list of others who want to start in April.” https://www.youtube.com/embed/xpKvQxrFL2M

Getting fit and having fun in Leamington Spa

Thanks to a YouCan grant, adults with learning disabilities in Leamington Spa now have a full suite of sporting equipment at their disposal including a football and rugby ball, baseball and bat, badminton set, boxing gloves and pads, a hula hoop set, cones to set out goals and an inflatable darts set with Velcro darts making them easy and safe to use. Bromford runs a hub at Leamington, supporting people to get involved in their local community and socialise. Dan Jhutti, hub advisor, said: “There is a group of six to 15 hub customers who now have a focus on activities every Friday. It all ‘kicked off’ with a previous customer, Tom, who loved sports. He has since moved but another customer, David, runs the group and encourages others to get involved. “If the weather’s good, they will go to the local park and then come back for a cup of tea. If it’s not, they will play games or cards inside. It’s great to see how the group has evolved since it was first set up and it’s very much up to customers to decide what they want to do. It fits very nicely with our focus on health and wellbeing and we’re hoping that as the weather improves, customers will go out a bit more. “We share the equipment with our hubs in Stratford, Studley and Atherstone so others can benefit and there’s some grant money left over so we are looking forward to deciding what to buy with that. “The application process is really quick and easy – we got the full grant amount within two weeks of applying and YouCan provided us with a prepaid credit card we could spend in [...]

Community couple get YouCan boost

Dave and Angela Gallagher live in Lichfield and love to fundraise. Both suffer from poor health so “it gives us something to take our minds off our illnesses and we like to help the community.” Having run successful table top sales on Sundays at Curborough Community Centre, they came up with the idea of a summer fete but were unable to raise the funding themselves. Angela says: “We live in the same street as Marie Bull from Bromford and she told us that we could apply for funding from YouCan. We didn’t know anything about it and have funded things ourselves in the past so it was a real help to have the £300 grant.” The £300 YouCan grant went towards the costs of advertising, refreshments & entertainment costs. The fete was held in July and was a huge success. Lots of people from the community had stalls in the hall and North Lichfield Initiative - a volunteer-led group supporting one of the most deprived areas in Lichfield – and the local community police got involved too. Dave says: “The weather was against us but despite that we had a great time and made a clear profit of £444 which was shared between Curborough Centre and North Lichfield Initiative.” The much needed funds raised will help the two charities with their on-going work for the residents of Lichfield. Both community organisations support and deliver community activities across a number of Bromford communities, with quite a few Bromford customers volunteering to support both initiatives. Dave continues: “Everybody thought the day was wonderful and wanted to do one again which we had booked but unfortunately have since had to cancel due to ill health. “However if that [...]
